Making a football team Afghan

The afghan has the team name at the bottom and I'm having trouble figuring out how to switch the colors back and forth with such small areas between them. Not sure I'm stating this right, i..e., GGGGYYYYYYYGGYYYGYYYY.

I know of 2 ways to change colors for what you're doing...

1. You can carry the yarn under stitches.  Lay the color that you're not using across the top and do a stitch, like it wasn't there.  It'll be captured under the yarn.  This is the easiest method, but colors, especially dark/light do show slightly.
2. You can create small balls of each color.  You'll need 2 for the main color on the sides and a ball for each color change.  For example, GGGGYYYYYYYGGYYYGYYYY is 3 balls of green and 3 of yellow.
