Help with invisible join

can anyone help with making these joins invisible? every time i join on to a chain it leaves a little gap in the round.

Don't join into the chain. Instead, join into the first stitch. Make the ch1 (or 2 as is typical for hdc), then go ahead and make the first stitch in that same spot. Try that and see if it helps.

 

Also i notice she uses a chain joined into a ring as the beginning, and calls this a magic ring....but magic ring or adjustable loop is actually a different method.

so if i was doing a proper magic circle (i just googled how to do it haha) would i then chain 2, do 10 half double crochets then slip stitch into the first half double crochet?

yes.  try either 1 or 2 turning ch, see which looks better.

 

and esp. for magic loop, you need to securely weave in the yarn tail.  just cocheting over it won't hold it in place.
