Difficulty understanding pattern :(

Rebecca Noelle Jackson

Question

Hi, I made this account specifically because I've been struggling with this pattern for the past two days.

http://heather-thegoodlife.blogspot.sk/2010/12/soft-as-lamb-scarf.html

I got through rows 1 and 2 fine, (and now I have a cute...mini scarf made of rings) but I can't understand at all what row 3 is asking me to do.

" 3. Small shell in ch-2 sp, and in each ch-2 sp across (total of 57 small shells), sl st in next 2 sc, ch 1, do not turn work (first side of edging is complete)."

Any ideas?

Welcome to Crochetville!

The pattern is having you complete an edge in rows 1-3.  In row 4 you'll start working on the actual scarf.

Rows 1-3 are actually a round and a 1/2 ...

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   Row 3  <---

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   Row 1  <---

-----------------------------------------   Foundation chain

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   Row 2  ---->

So in row 1, you worked into the foundation chain, like normal.

In row 2, you worked into the back of the foundation chain.

In row 3, you're working into row 1.

Does it make sense now?

Row 1 had you make 57 small shells, which include a ch-2 in the middle.  In row 3, you'll be making a small shell in each of those ch-2 spaces.  You'll have 57 shells in the middle of row 1's 57 shells.  At the end of that, you'll slip stitch into the last 2 sc stitches of the last shell.  That gets you to the edge, where you'll do a ch 1 turning chain and turn.
