Filet Granny Square Copyright?

Got a question that I just can't seem to find an answer on...

 

Is the Filet Granny Square pattern copyrighted???

 

I have a leaflet with a bunch of ponchos and wraps in it and I made something using the Filet Granny Square in the booklet, but I did not make the item the way they suggested. I made what I'm calling a Shawlette (1/2 shawl 1/2 jacket). Some posters have suggested I submit this pattern since I really did come up with the placement of the squares to make this item myself... I just don't know if I'm allowed to because it's using the Filet Granny Pattern...

 

Any help would be appreciated!!!

P.S. I wonder if this goes along with a Granny Square too? I mean, many people submit projects to magazines where they are made out of Granny Squares so there must be some lee-way here...
