Pattern help!

The pattern I am working on calls for this:   [ 2 dc. (ch 1, 3 dc) 4 times]

 

What do I do 4 times?  I don't understand why there are brackets around this AND parentheses. 

 

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am crocheting a star.  The line reads...Ch 4.

                                                           1st row: [2 dc. (ch 1, 3 dc) 4 times. Ch1]  all in 4th ch from hook.  Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch 4.

OK, so all into that fourth chain, you will do:

Two dc

Chain one, three dc

Chain one, three dc

Chain one, three dc

Chain one, three dc

Chain one

 

Edit to add, the chain ones do not go into the fourth ch from hook----but you know that i am sure ;-)
