Help buying crochet hooks

cr130

Question

Hello,

I am trying to buy all the crochet hooks for my wife for Christmas but am very confused on the sizes/letters. I have tried to look at different sites but it seems like I am getting conflicting information and it seems the stores do not have every option available. Now I know she uses aluminum hooks from the brand Boye, and I wanted to stick with that brand because she likes those a lot.  I have noticed that not all hooks come in aluminum once you get past a certain size and also noticed that the letters start with a "B" ? So basically can someone lay out all the sizes for a confused husband? I know I could just ask her but wanted it to be a surprise since its for Christmas! Thank you in advance.

Hi, what a nice gift you are planning!

this page gives the US standard sizes B and larger http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/hooks.html

this page shows what size are used with what weight of yarn http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/weight.html

You see on that page, it talks about the very fine yarns/threads and "steel" hooks, that is what the smallest range of hooks are called.  The steels are mainly for crocheting with thread.

Here is the Boye page for their hooks, starting with the steels http://www.simplicity.com/c-436-metal-crochet-hooks.aspx   if you click on the "more info" you can see the mm size of them.  the "1" steel at 2.25mm is actually smaller than the B aluminum hook, so it can be confusing.

This site I beleive should include all of the sizes that boye makes.  and you can order from there if you want.
