Trouble counting rows in pattern

I am working on a pattern with the shell stitch and had to pull out some rows; and then of course lost count of the number of rows. Is there an easy way to figure out how many rows I have, they all run together.

Assuming this is still the tank top pattern...

the shells fit together like bricks, they are offset, not in straight columns.  if you look at the photo here http://www.mooglyblog.com/solid-shell-stitch/

you can easily see the separate rows as they are different colors, and you can see the blue sc made into the top of the gray shells.  (the gray sc into the blue shell is harder to see in the photo).  

to count, start at the top with a blue sc made into the top of a gray shell, the sc represents one row.  the gray shell below it is row 2.  the next blue sc is row 3.  and so on.
