Please help me choose a project

Question

I have been contentedly living in a crochet rut of afghans (ok, I have made some scarves, hats, and a shawl) and I need to make a special gift for someone. Ordinarily, I would defer to an afghan of sorts. But this person lives in a warm area, so an afghan seems pretty impractical to me.

The intended gift recipient is a down-to-earth type gentleman. I have worked with tunisian too, if that can help. Even looking through project ideas I am still at a loss, does anyone have any ideas?

A market bag, you could use some lovely linen or hemp yarn. They can be fun to make and useful too. I like this http://theartofzencrochet.blogspot.com/2010/09/free-patterns-for-hemp-produce-sacs.html

It's made with a big hook and the stitches really open up.

Dish/wash cloths. Potholders or trivets. A table runner. A pillow cover.

If it gets cool at night, he might still like a light afghan.

Thank you, that is a lovely market bag, and I can definitely see myself making it.

After pondering this a little longer, I think I am going to go ahead and look for an afghan pattern anyway. What feels cool is often relative, and surely an afghan can always have some practicality, right :)
