Hook size relationship to sizing

I only do basic/beginner crochet, so to those more skilled this is probably a dumb question. I think my logic is right, but before I dive into this, I wanted confirmation. The pattern is a basic baby throw with sleeves, imagine those snuggly things they sell on TV.

 

The pattern is for a 6 mos size, I need it for a newborn. The pattern calls for Red Heart-Designer Sport yarn and an "H" hook. If I use a smaller hook, the end product will be smaller, right?

Yes, it will.  I just have no idea how much smaller.

 

I think you'd be better off using a pattern for a newborn than guestimating how much smaller it'll be.

I think the best thing you can do is make a small sample of the pattern,  in order to have an idea of how small your throw will be.

In that way, you are going to avoid  unpleasant surprises!!!
