Hippo help

TinaKB

Question

Hello ladies, I'd like to make this hippo, but really don't understand the instructions for the snout.

http://bittersweetblog.com/2007/03/12/hungry-hungry-hippo/

Where it says ' continuing around, sc 1 into back loops only of next 6 st, etc etc,' it's the 'continuing around' bit that's confusing.

If you follow these instructions, it doesn't make 18 stitches, it just makes the chain 9 taller.

Can someone please explain for me.

Thanks x

You treat it like it is being done  in the round and instead of joining do your stitches in the stitches already done starting in the first one.

Hello, thanks, but I don't see how doing that will make it longer? It just makes it taller or wider if you see what I mean.

Still not getting it :(

Oh I see what you mean Looking at it again I think it means to work in the opposite side of the starting ch working around  in the back loop to make the oval that would give you more stitches. I  will add this to my ever grewing list as my daughter will like it.

crochet oval
