Trouble with Round Start

Stacey Ashford

Question

Hi guys,

I got a Hollywood crochet set for Christmas and I'm trying to make Elvis (lol). Trouble is, I've never worked in rounds so I'm struggling to understand how to start; Can someone explain to me with pictures or a video on how to start the first row; the guide is:

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 6 dc into 1st ch - 6st.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

this should help http://crochetcabana.com/html/round_howto.html

welcome to the ville :hook

Thank you for the speedy reply. Just checked that out. What I'm struggling to follow is because it says to start with just 2ch and a lot of these videos are starting from 5 or 6ch and up.

It's also confusing me as it says work 6ch into the 1st ch.

sorry, I thought there was a video there of working the sts into the second chain.

what you need to do is to make 2 chains.  then go into the first chain you made (which will be the second chain from the hook) and in that spot you will make the 6 dc stitches.  Now, I have to say that I think your pattern is using UK terminology, so a UK double crochet is the same stitch as a US single crochet.  I say that because you use one turning chain for US sc/UK dc.  If it were US dc/UK treble crochet, you would need 3 turning chains.  So before you proceed be sure you know which kind of stitch you need to use.

I'll see if I can find a visual of starting the round into a chain stitch for you.

this seems to be the best visual I can find for doing the first round into the second chain http://planetmfiles.com/2010/02/09/crochet-heart-step-by-step/

the Planetjune blog has lots of good amigurumi info http://www.planetjune.com/blog/tutorials/crochet-tutorials/ If you prefer, you can substitute the "magic ring" start for the stitches into second chain method.
