here is a good pattern on the Caron site (Yarnspirations) http://www.yarnspirations.com/pattern/crochet/granny-stripes-afghan  it is by Edie Eckman, who is  a very good writer, and I love it because it is both written out and diagrammed so i can *see* how the pattern works.

I would not have thought that Pinterest was the best way to find patterns.  I usually go to Ravelry's pattern directory.  There is also a free pattern directory right here on Crochetville , tab at top of this page.

Oops, forgot about the chevron question.  The Easy Ripple by SusanB http://www.handcraftingwithlove.net/yarn/pat-ripple.html

has been made by a lot of people and I believe it is actually easy to follow; some ripple pattterns can get complicated and confusing for some of us---like me for instance lol.

My personal favorite would be something from Jan Eaton's book 200 Ripple Patterns http://www.amazon.com/200-Ripple-Stitch-Patterns-Exciting/dp/089689276X/ref=la_B001IXTPW2_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1388693446&sr=1-6

I used #140 Shades of Coral for the throw in my avatar.  You can really get a feel for the book via the Look Inside feature, and see some of the patterns in full.  ( I had no idea the selling price of the book had gone up so much, but it is probably available via your local library or interlibrary loan)
