Need help with a pattern!

Question

I'm attempting to make the hat at this link http://www.yarnspirations.com/assets/files/pattern-files/pdf/Bernat_Cottonishweb10_cr_hat.en_US.pdf

I'm up to the point where I need to break A and join the main color but I'm not sure exactly how to do that. I'm also confused about how to go from there. I know how to do the dcfp and dcbp but should this be going perpendicular to the portion I've already made or is it in the round? And can anyone explain the purpose of the stitch marker in this case?

Thanks for any help! I'm still learning :)

Welcome to the ville :hook

I think they have you place the marker just as a reference point, so you can work for x amount past the marker.

You will be working in the round. If it were perpendicular there would have to be a foundation chain or foundation stitches to get started.

To join on new yarn, the old standby is to just slip stitch it on, and then do the chain three. But a cool way to start would be with a standing dc, see this blog entry by E Eckman http://blog.lionbrand.com/2009/10/01/motif-afghan-crochet-along-crochet-techniques-part-i/

Scroll down a bit.
