What does it mean to 'pat' over x number of stitches?

I'm not sure how to explain this but I'll attempt it. Somewhere in the pattern it should tell you what the patten stitches for that item are. In this one it sounds like it would be the stitches that make up the design.

What sarisue said. For example, if you're working with a stitch pattern where the stitches that make up up the pattern are worked over 5 stitches, and the instructions say "pat over next 20 sts" you'd work the 5 stitch repeat 4 times.
