Question about stitches

Justine Kitts

Question

Ello Ello,

I'm trying to make a pattern for a skirt, and I have most of what I want figured out. What I'm having trouble with is how do I increase with lacework stitches. All the charts and instructions for stitches are just straight. I can not figure out, or find, how to incorporate a pattern repeat increase, for any stitch other than the basics. I'm going a lotta nuts here!

welcome to the ville :hook

if you have a lace pattern in mind, some info about that might help with increase ideas.

in general, with a fairly simple lace pattern, you can add chains to increase, like in the Jolimar skirt http://www.yarnspirations.com/naturallycaron-files/projects/jolimar/jolimar.pdf  it is easy to see the increases in the diagram on the last page.

or you could insert columns of plain stitches and increase the number of them , as in this skirt http://www.interweavestore.com/lace-skirt-with-drawstring-waist

Or you could adapt a pattern that already has increases, like a doily pattern, just leave out the center part.

i don't think there is any formula or hard and fast way to do this.  I think there may be some info in L Chin's book Couture Crochet, D Ohrenstein's Creating Crochet Fabric and Crochet Insider's Passion for Fashion where she talks about her design process, and D Chan's books would be helpful---start with Amazing Crochet Lace.   Have you looked at the Japanese site of Pierrot yarns?  they have lots of free diagrammed patterns and i know there are at least a few skirts.
