what did you do in the previous row?  sometimes a stitch pattern has you make a little shell-type st pattern in one row.  for example sc, ch2, hdc across the row.  then on the next row you just ignore the ch2s and the hdcs and do the 2 sc in the sc.  to do this, just hold forward the chain sts and work into the sc as you normally would.  it makes a slightly ruffled effect.
