counting stitches

Question

I'm making seamless baby booties. When I count the stitches in a round sometimes I don't have the correct number. I suspect that the slip stitch joins are the culprits. Is a slip stitch ( used for joining ) to be worked as the last stitch in a round or should it be discounted?

It depends on the pattern. Sometimes it counts as a stitch and sometimes it doesn't. Are you using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the rounds to help you keep track of where you are? It can be easy to lose track of where you are when working in the round, especially if the pattern is worked in spiral/"continuous" rounds. My first suggestion would be to use a stitch marker to make sure you're ending your rounds in the proper place.
