Question

Hello everyone! I am new to the forum, but look forward to learning a lot from all of you!
I have been looking into learning a technique like "Crochet by Numbers", but I cannot afford to spend the money to learn the technique ($75), and then an additional fee ($50) for each photo pattern you order. I found a program online, Knitpro, and submitted a photo to get a graph...here is the big question: How do you know where to start with it??? Ugh! Of course they don't give you any instructions such as which stitch to use and how to change colors...and there is not even a color chart with it...so I am at a loss as to where to begin.
Does anyone on here use such a graph to convert a photo to a crocheted item? Or do any of you have a better way of doing such? I lost my Daddy a few years ago, and would love to create afghans of him to give to my kids and my Mom. Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!
