I'm trying to crochet the sweater and sleeves together from a pattern and its says to sc in first dc, sc in each dc of next 3 shells, ‡ and I'm not sure what this symbol means.  Thanks

Some patterns use that as a starting place for pattern repeats.

Yes, sometimes it's used to indicate repeats instead of using *.

 

If a number of different repeats are in a pattern, you will sometimes see a variety of symbols used, so don't be surprised if you also see # or < or + or even :.
