pattern reading

hi!!, I'm trying out this new book, http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/pub/PDF/RiegoCro11th.pdf which has patterns written in the old crochet language, I'm reading the pattern for the Gupiure collar and i can just not figure a few things

 

for instance, what is the differnce between plain and single

 

what does it mean, to do 1 single, 5 plain, 2 plain in one.

 

Also, are there any Russians on here, because I have this beautiful rug pattern written in russian. I tried google translating it, but it doesnt make sense, so if there is anyone who can translate it for me, i"ll post the link for that too.
