Shrinking socks

I made my first pair of socks yesterday and even though I followed the directions precisely and measured my foot as I went along, when I got finished and put it on, it turned out quite large. I can wear it, but it's too big. Is it possible to shrink it? If I put it in the washer, will it reduce in size? Any help would be appreciated as I want to have this "sock making" thing down pat so I can do a good job for my sock swap partner!
