In search of a pattern

Does anyone have a pattern for a skullcap/beanie that is made of what looks like shells, made using 3 double crochets. My uncle has a cap that is falling apart that he wanted me to recreate, and I cannot for the life of me figure it out.

 

It starts with 8 doubles and then goes into shells. I know the hat is 8 rounds, the last round has 22 shells. But I cannot figure out how to increase the rounds.

 

Unfortunately it was shown to me, I checked some details, and then my uncle went home which is two hours away, and I cant figure out how to increase.

 

Also, I did make a note that the next rounds shells were in the previous rounds middle stitch, not in the ch-spaces.
