I like:

- Pictorial Index

- 33 stitch type categories

- V-stich category (11 patterns)

- 12 shell / cluster categories (152 shell / cluster stich patterns total) - Simple, Filet, Symmetrical, Overall, Shells & Chains, Staggered, Small Lace Patterns, Fantail, Treble Crochet, Large Lace Patterns, Clusters, Clusters-Inverted Shells

 

I didn't really like:

- Every picture is in same white wool yarn, with 70's color scheme background (golden yellow, green, orange, medium blue)

- No stitch names, only numbers

- Almost every stitch has some open-ness to it, even most of the bobbles and popcorns section (unusual for a large crochet stitch reference book)

- Author's original stich patterns- I can guess which ones they are, and there's something unbalanced about most of them imo.

 

My Summary: Do not buy as your first and only crochet reference. Maybe as a supplement, wait for sale price. I had a gift card, so used it on this book that I had been passing on. I have several other reference books (Crochet Bible, Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet, RD's Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet, Vogue's Crochet Basics) that are far better reference points, especially for a beginner.
