I love the idea of trying to get the guests involved in a present for the bride and groom. My fiancee's brother recently got married and I wanted to make them something. I made a very large blanket (at least 7 feet long and 5 feet wide-Jim is a very tall man) all in sc with 2 strands of simple yarn and a p hook. I crocheted a large irish cross in the center (both are religious and irish), and at the bottom I crocheted "Jim + Karen". Under that I put the date of thier wedding. They loved it, keep on their couch and use it all the time. I am sure that whatever you end up doing will be perfect for them.

Another good idea for a keepsake is a very old one that doesn't involve crochet but embroidery! Have guests sign a tablecloth and then embroider over the signatures so they are permanent!
