Need help with pattern

Hello! I am a new crocheter but have already accomplished making on of these granny squares: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/summer-garden-granny-square.html

 

I really want to accomplish making a square that looks like this, but I haven't found a pattern that looks like it. It's very similar to the above pattern - does anyone have any guidance on how to tweak the above one to get the square looking like this:
