messenger bag?

Kalliopeia

Question

I hope someone can help me out here. I'm going to a tennis tournament in August, and the last two years I've carried a big bag and I felt like a pack mule. This year I want to go lighter and smaller but everything I find that is even remotely adequate is too expensive. I thought I might try to make one but am having no luck finding a good pattern.

What I'm looking for is a messenger type bag, roomy but not gigantic, sturdy and with a long strap. It needs to be big enough to carry, at minimum, a water bottle, a wallet, a cell phone, a couple of bottles of sunscreen, and a camera. And a few extras thrown in that I always end up with.

I realize this is pretty specific. :D Can anyone point me to anything that may work?

Here is one: http://www.crochetkitten.com/files/The_Crocheter_s_Messenger.pdf

I am thinking there is another one that is a free pattern that is done in Camaflage Yarn and the girl is standing by a tree. I have wanted to try that one. I can't remember where I saw it. Maybe someone else knows? I thought it was on Crochetme but I couldn't find it. Maybe the designer has pulled it. If so too bad. I got this link from http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com

How about a diaper bag pattern? They have lots of pockets, roomy interior-you can carry a change of clothes if you need them. Lion brand yarns has a great pattern for a felted one.

This pattern always intrigues me but I just haven't made one yet but it was my first thought at your request.

Ooh, I do like that. I'm not sure it'd really work for this though, as it doesn't look sturdy enough to be carrying around the relatively heavy things I'll need. I'm bookmarking that though, so thanks! :)

I've thought of that, but most of the ones I've seen are bigger than what I'm looking for. I keep looking for a smallish one.

And thanks to everyone for the suggestions. There are a couple that could work. I appreciate it! :)

I don't know if you like working with plarn....but here is a messenger bag made out of plastic bags....it is VERY sturdy!

I also think that the messenger bags at the crochetville corner market are cute....they are also strong and not TOO expensive.....considering what you would be spending to buy yarn.

BTW I LOVED looking at your BLOG.......enjoyed seeing your crocheting, but really enjoyed looking at your bead work.....the pieces that you have made are so beautiful!
