Measuring a square -- across the diagonal?

This is probably a very silly question, but my pattern says that my crochet squares should = 6 in. Does this mean 6" via length or width, OR does it mean 6" on the diagonal? THANK YOU! This question is driving me bananas as I work on my very first baby blanket.

If it's a true square, the measurement in width and lenght should be the same. Not sure about the diaganol though. Good luck on your blanket.

Never measure on the diagonal unless the pattern states that specifically.

Deb, if you're going to make a lot of squares, measure and cut out squares of the size or sizes from cardboard then just compare it to the piece you made, then you can go up or down hook size as needed for gauge.
