Unless there is some written labeling with the thread which tells you the size. Your best bet is to compare it to size 10 or 20 or 30 thread you own or at the store and you will then know what size you have. You can also find size 3 and sometimes size 5 at the store depending on the store. You could also do a Google search on sample thread sizes and see if they have pictures and compare. I had some thread which was my mother's and I wanted to put a contrasting color with it. I took it to AC Moore's and found out it was size three thread. Even though there was was paper identifying who made the thread and a color number there was no size information. Good luck.
