Hook & Needles storage...

Recommended Posts

I was wondering, how do you keep them safe? Do you have some kind of cover? plastic box or anything like that?

I don´t know where/how to keep them :( So I need some ideas :)

I was thinking about making something myself with denim fabric.. what do you think? Have you seen any tutorial or anything like that?

Thanks! Hugs :hug

For my knitting needles, I keep them in a wine container I got at Michael's for $1. It's perfect for keeping them all together and has a strap to carry them around if necessary. For crochet hooks, it really all depends: at home I keep them in a wooden box that has a handle that I got at Target but I can't remember the price. It's a great box as it has 3 sections on one side and 1 long section on the other. I keep my steels/aluminums in 1 section, TOTC/Brittanys/bamboo in another and pencils in the last. The long section I keep my rulers/tape measures/scissors/larger hooks (S,Q) etc. With the handle on top it's great for toting around. It's wood so it's really sturdy & solid. When I travel anywhere, I have the cutest little purse that is supposed to be for eyeglasses that I picked up at the drugstore. It holds my crochet hooks perfectly. I love it! It's the size of a wallet with a handle. Here's a picture of what it looks like.

I was lazy and used a coupon for the Boye hook case (that way I could justify not making one myself, lol).

My wooden hooks all came with their own little pouches and I just leave them in those in my craft box - until I get around to making a storage case for them (too long for the boye case).

I have a Boye case for my hooks (though they never seem to make it back in :lol ), and I have a long mini M&M's tube that they're more likely to make it into. I've got one bamboo hook and a couple more on the way, so I'll want to make a case for them. I'm not sure what to do with my knitting needles, mom has a plastic case for hers but I want something different. Plus, my circs and DPNs wouldn't fit very well in it!

For my crochet hooks, I keep them in a small pine, handcarved box made in Poland. My husband bought it for me when we lived in Germany. It sits on the end table in my living room and looks very nice :) I haven't bought anything for my knitting needles yet...still looking :)

For hooks, yarn needles, and so on I use this:

hookhold2.jpg

(Rather than post two pictures, this is what it looks like standing up: http://daisywreath.net/crochet/img/hookhold1.jpg in case it's not clear from the photo...)

It's one of those containers that you can get those weird puffy Doritos and various other strange snack foods. It's not big enough for my Q and S hooks, but everything else fits in there, including a 7" ruler, my little folding scissors, and my yarn needles. And the cap is nice for putting the needles, threader, and little scissors in so I don't lose them every time I set them down :haha

I am going to keep mine in a pipe with an inside diameter of 1 inch, there are caps on both ends and one cap is glued on while the other is removeable. My aunt is making it and she's going to crochet a cover for it. She has one of her own and it just looks too cool!

For home use, mine are in a decorative pot on the end table beside the couch, and before I got my laptop, I kept duplicates in a coffee mug on my computer desk. For travel I made a hook case that holds all my hooks and has a pocket for scissors guage checker etc. The pattern for it is :http://www.sarahanns.com/crochetworks/case.html and I added some fur trim and a handle to it rather than the flower.

I keep mine in a diaper wipe container. Holds everything except the tunisian and cable hooks. I've got one of those plastic 3 drawer roll around filing cabinets that I keep all my current projects in. Works great for me.

I keep my hooks and other supplies in a pencil case my mom got me from the 99 cent store. I love it. It's blue, plastic-y, feels nice and it actually smells kinda good, too. :D

My knitting needles, on the other hand, are not safe at all. They're just hanging around wherever. :P It's all good because I don't use them anyway. :lol

I don't knit often but my knitting needles are in a mason jar vase (with a crochet cover" hehe! Isn't that weird? I added some flowers to the vase too. My crochet hooks are in an oval plastic snap tube I picked up at the flea mkt for a quarter lol. I later saw the same tube on a craft website as a crochet hook holder (Michaels or JoAnns maybe?). I would like to have a nicer way of storing them, but have them closer at hand. I like the wooden case on the coffee table idea or some sort of "base" they would stick out of but look nice. I have thought about a decorative ceramic "toothbrush holder" with something inside to keep them more stable. Maybe I'll find one I like sometime.

Since I now have a treasured TOTC hook, (thanks to my wonderful Crochetville Mrs Santa!!!) I would like to store it safely but display it's beauty also. I keep it in it's cardboard cyclinder safe for now but perhaps I will find something to display it but have it safe at the same time.

I don't knit, so I have no needles, but I keep all my crochet hooks, yarn cutter, yarn needled, tape measure, etc., all in an ArtBin pencil box.

My steel thread hooks are in a plastic cigar tube. ( These go everywhere ! )

My yarn hooks are in the second drawer of the jewelry case. (below)

The above tools are kept in a small 4 drawer velvet jewelry case beside my chair.

My 14 " knitting needles are kept in an antique cedar box ( under the velvet case);

My 10" knitting needles are in the same cedar box.;

My double points ( 4 sets each size) are in toothbrush holders ( Walmart) with the size marked on them. ( 8's & above need 1 holder for each 2 sets.) These take up 2 drawers in that velvet case. I can see at a glance what size I'm going after.

The top of that velvet case opens up and that's where I keep the yarn sewing needles, measuring tapes, markers, pins, scissors, etc

Also at my elbow, is a black plastic turn-around thingy; from Walmart; (Kitchen section) that's made for keeping stove tools in( forks, spatulas, etc). In this, I keep, pens, scrap paper, ruler, any stray needles, hooks., etc. Once a week, I put everything away in it's place.

Now the only things that aren't RIGHT THERE; are my circular knitting needles. These, I keep , by size, in nice, fabric, zipper pencil pouches; in 2 big notebooks, in the bookcase nearby.

Now, when the school supplies go on sale; I need alot more of these pencil bags; because of a casino windfall; ( yea ! ) I will be making a trip to the Yarn Barn for ALL the missing sizes of shorter, circular needles to complete my collection. !!

I have NO duplicates, now. I shipped those to Afghans 4 Afghans, to be shipped to the refugee camps. So, NOW, when I put a tool down, it makes me PUT IT AWAY in it's own place ! I finally got everything organized !!

And WOE TO HE WHO MESSES WITH MY SYSTEM !!

I use a flat plastic container from baby diaper wipes. I think they're sold for putting in the diaper bag. I have different brands of hooks, so each brand goes into a different container. If I'm travelling with a thread hook, I remove the refill from a Bic stick pen and use that as a travelling container.

I bought a plastic case the other day from Michaels. It's to hold pens, notions, cutter, etc. It fits all my hooks perfectly. It's the size of an eyeglass case and translucent purple. It has a pop lid, I love it too~

My Brittany hooks (wood) and Q hooks are in a quilted crochet case someone made.

I have a nice flat cosmetic bag from a Estee Lauder kit from years ago that works great. I was looking at it one day in my bathroom- and said, " hey this might work for hooks"!! It zips up three sides and is nice and sturdy. It even has the brush holders in the top that I put my brittany hooks into for easy reach. It was a part of a gift with purchase kits- I love those!!

Target had some cute embroidered cosmetic bags in their 1.00 spot that work well for extra hooks in a travel bag, for long drives.

Also, Arizona Tea has a powder mix in little cups like crystal light. They package these little cups in a very nice tin that holds hooks well.

I move my stuff around alot and I'm wondering if the aluminum & steel hooks rubbing or banging together will cause damage like scratches, dings or anything.... Has anyone found this happening?

Thanks all...

Cindy
