Went to my local Walmart (PA) yesterday to pick up a cone of sugar n' cream to finish my tote bag. (My walmart sells them for $6.67). Usually don't have many colors to choose from.

All the material and trims were 75% off and I talked with the ladies in the fabric dept. They told me they were not going to carry the fabric and trims anymore but would still be carrying yarn and other craft items.

Thought I would let everyone know.

I saw our local Walmart had all their beads on clearance yesterday and it looked like they had rearranged several of the aisles and either had fewer silk flowers or had incorporated them into less space, but still no sign that the fabric or other sections will be eliminated.

At the other two Walmarts near here, everything is gone except for a much smaller section of yarn, all basic Red Heart, crochet hooks and knitting needles and a few sewing notions. I couldn't even find a spool of thread.

All the Walmarts are getting rid of fabric etc as the stores do their remodel. This has been in the making for several years, and no matter how we whine and call them it isn't going to change. They don't want to pay one lady to stand all day just to cut fabric. It is so sad. The new setup is very minimal and even our new Walmart has a small selection of yarns. What bugs me, is they don't even keep stocked what they do have. I can't depend on them having the color that I want in the bin they put there for it. I just can't depend on Walmart having anything that I am actually looking for. I feel sorry for those of you who don't have a JoAnn's or Michaels, or Hobby Lobby near you so that you can get some decent yarn. I guess buying online has become more popular for business these days. :manyheart

I rarely go to Walmart anymore. I have Joann's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby and Hancock and then our Target expanded. It also seems that their prices have stopped being much better than other places and their stock is often low.

Was there this past week. Tried to get some help in the department but after 3 calls over the intercom, gave up.

I was talking to a clerk up front and she said that they can't seem to sell much fabric so they are not going to have it anymore. I told her I've had the electronic department page someone to come to the craft department three times and not even a manager showed up. No wonder they can't sell any fabric. There is no one there to cut it and put a tag on it. And I've always had that problem at Wal-mart!!!!

Well, I'm from canada and my walmart is changing too.

They are moving kits and other wierd stuff into the yarn isle. The yarn Isle has shrunk so much that one day I fear there will be nothing there to pick from. Good thing I have a good quality stash on hand!!!

So I keep checking the bargain area, never know what I will find.

I am so far from a michaeals it isnt funny. :(

I have gotten to know the lady who works in the fabric/craft dept of the Wal-mart I frequent the most and she said they are going to be eliminating fabric at that store. But whenever I am there, it is constantly busy and people are always buying fabric, men, women, teenagers. They are crazy to think that they aren't selling it. At Christmas last year, one woman had at least a dozen bolts of fabric to be measured and cut since she was making fleece throws for gifts. They actually have more fabric bolts, both in the aisle and against the wall than yarn skeins. Go figure, I can't.

My Walmart has such a small selection that I no longer consider it a place to buy yarn. They never even stocked the pitiful selection they do have! I shop online, in store at Michaels, Joanns, and AC Moore, and now, an LYS -- which I better stay out of or I will go broke, LOL.

It's a shame, because there are people who are in areas of the country where there is no other place to buy yarn, other than on-line. I like buying on-line if I know in advance what the color/texture is like, but otherwise I like to go in person -- it's half the fun! :D

Also, let's face it...the Yarn Department in Walmart has always been the #1 place to hang out when your spouse is over in Electronics or the Hardware Aisle! :rofl

We lost ours early last year...they do have a small selection of yarn, but I recently heard they were getting rid of that, too. I live in a small town surrounded by rural areas...there is no other fabric store for 40 miles. I could see where they might eliminate the section at a walmart in a city where there is competition, but in places like this, it makes no sense.

OH MY GOODNESS !!Thats all im needing now...our 2 walmarts here barely have anything now...I went the other day to buy some black i needed in RH..and they didnt even have that...and walmart is the only place I can get yarn an RHSS its the only place. We have a place called Capri, but that has mostly thread and not much of that either.

I asked the lady who works in the fabric department here and she said they aren't getting rid of it here. They are making changes in the crafts, looks like they're eliminating the beading supplies, but the yarn and fabric sections look the same.

I disagree that it does no good to call. I've always found Walmart to be VERY responsive if you call the 800 corporate number.

They do seem to be a bit clueless about where their business comes from in rural areas. I asked the manager here why the prices are higher in this store for groceries than in the other Walmarts in the area. He said they were competitive with the only other grocery store in town.

Well, this is a rural area. I'll bet 90% of their shoppers are like me and don't live in the little town but further away. I'm about 30-35 miles from the store. It's just as easy for me to go a few miles further and go to one of the other towns and shop, towns that have more than one grocery store, a Joanns or a Michaels. So it's just assenine to think their only competition is the one other store in their town.

I think in the rural areas they'll see a lot of people opting to go elsewhere to shop if they eliminate all the crafts departments. If you have to drive to buy a skein of yarn, you're not going to turn around and drive back to the Walmart to buy groceries and other items.

I'm so far out in the boondocks that it's an 80 mile round trip to Michaels or Joanns.

Our Walmart has kept their fabric and cut their yarn supply in half. Quilting is HUGE out here and the fabric dept is always crowded.

A lot of what they are going to give up and keep depends on the demographic of the store location.

Well, I just found out that our walmart got rid of ALL of the fabric and drastically down sized the yarn department. That's gonna stink for a lot of people in this area (and within a 50 mile radius of walmart). They were the only ones with good prices and even regular yarn (as opposed to fancy and expensive yarn).

You call that boondocks?! It's about 90 miles round trip for me, you city slicker. LOLOL ;)

That's rotten about the yarn at your store. You should call corporate. What have you got to lose and the call is free.

went to walmart to see if they got in any more shaded browns cotton cones I managed to find one cone of it month ago ..which is a rare color find for my walmarts paltry yarn selection..nothing ...but,they had a huge linen markdown and ended up with 2 bed quilt sets and 2 -300 count sheet sets..I have no sale resistence genes, seems yarn and nice bedding is my personal curse..maybe science should work on that one too..

Walmart got rid of our fabric dept long ago ..next closest place for fabric here was Joann's and ours had a fire and I don't mean fire sale lol and yes the thought did come as to what happened to the yarn was it tossed into some trash bin? so what if smelled like 2 week old campfire hahaaaaa I could deal with it ..apparently they are remodeling it as we were afraid it would just close down ..and another fabric sourse would be down the drain.

Ours remolded this past fall and kep some fabric (maybe half of a large area) and changed the yarn (no more SS and more RH which I prefer). They did cut down on the peaches & cream cone (from several shelves to maybe 2), but I made so many dishclothes that I haven't bought it for a while, so it's fine. I live in an area where people craft. They did take out most of the scrapbooking items and left maybe a few things. No more cross stitch or even emboirdery thread (even for crafts, another lady was looking for it and I told her to go to Micheals--unless it was somewhere else). The bead section changed too.

So I think ours is set for a while because peple here sew or quilt and use yarn.

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that Walmart has some sort of computer model, where they determine what is selling in each store and what isn't. If something isn't selling, they get rid of it.

Yes, they are definetly downsizing their craft departments. There is barely any yarn left in my Walmart. Its sad because its so close to my home and I'm always there at least once a week. So, I been going to Hobby Lobby and they have a big selection on everything.

  • 2 weeks later...

Our Wal-Mart remodeled their store last year and the yarn section is now much bigger and better, much to my surprise last week. MUCH better.

However, Michael's went from 5 rows of yarn to 2, permanently. They also are no longer selling craft magazines whatsoever. The huge magazine and bookshelves have physically been removed from the stores.

JoAnn's has not made any changes.
