ISO Suggestions for Baby Hats to Crochet

Hello! I was volunteering some months ago at the local hospital, and got to talking with the head NeoNatal nurse there about doing crochet dresses/blankets etc for the babies. She was very kind and helpful and eager to give me a chance to do something for the hospital and we figured out that the ward did not need burial gowns or blankets so much as perhaps an item to give to the mothers whose baby died. She said the mothers so often want *something* as a memorial for their child, and she thought that perhaps if I were able to whip out some pretty little hats that might be a good thing to do.

I have been very very sloth in taking her up on this project because I am 1) lazy and 2) I also took up homeschooling my daughter (hence the dropping of volunteer hours at the hospital), BUT I am hoping I can do something now that I have a better idea of what life around the house will be like doing homeschool.

I am in search of a pattern that is easy and pretty to get out in a short time and something that will allow me to whip up about 10-20 for both girls and boys per month. I am also wondering if anyone has recommendations for the kind of yarn to use. The Head Nurse wanted me to find a thread that was soft, but not furry.

Am looking forward to any ideas or suggestions y'all might have!

Holy Moley! Sorry to highjack the thread but I was born in Richmond, right there at Polly Ryon. And lived in Rosenberg for many years. Small world, eh?

But as to your hats, did you want something a bit "pretty" and less on the practical side?

Ok just reread your post, something pretty you said maybe like a bonnet? Looking I know I have some links... Sorry for misreading! DOH!!!

I designed a couple different tiny hats that work up fast for this purpose:

I would recommend either TLC baby or microspun yarn for these patterns.

I would have loved to have something to take home with me, anything, after my two miscarriages, thats why I created these hats. I thank you for wanting to make them for the hospital and hope that the patterns help. I hope the moms will find comfort in them.

I plan to make up a bunch soon and pair them with tiny keepsake blankets to go with them. Soon as I get done with the charity drive I'm working on at the moment.

hugs

p.s. i homeschool too :)

REALLY?? Glad you said something...Polly Ryon is now known as Oak Bend Hospital...they have just built a Cancer wing to the hospital in association with Hermann (I think)...it is quite beautiful...I had toyed with the idea of making cancer caps as well, but I think starting small might be best for me right now...I have about three personal projects going!!

THANK YOU so much for the links! Now to choose WHICH one!!! LOL

Nice to meet you! I somehow managed to never leave my home town...how did you manage to escape? LLOL

thank you so very much! I am kicking myself for being so lazy, but then I found Crochetville, and it is good to have a group that can inspire you. You have helped!
