Somebody with a 5 year old child...I need advice!

I want to make a poncho for a little cousin for Christmas. She wears a size 5. I plan to make a basic poncho...2 rectangles sewn together.

 

My questionis... what should the dimensions of the rectangles be for a 5 year old child?

I made my 5yo's poncho with two panels that measured 11x22"

I can't wait to get started on the poncho. It is going to be purple with some kind of fun fur trim. Haven't decided on the trim yet. :cold :hsanta

Here is a pic of the poncho I made for my 6 yo daughter last summer. The rectangles (garter stitch knitting) are 10 x 20.
