More hat help

Question

Ok I read the other thread about hat help, but I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong. I made one last nite, just a simple baby stocking hat from some polar fleecs(or what ever it's called) It turned out fine. But today I've torn one apart about 4 times because it keeps looking like a beret.:cry

I'm determined to get this right, It's for my daughter's teacher who's having a baby soon. This is the hat.

I'm following the directions to a T and still can't get it with regular sport weight yarn.

I'm gonna lose it

Hi Lanette, at what point in the pattern are you frogging the hat? This pattern increases in the first 4 rounds and then it is worked without any increases in round 5 thru 11.

I'm wondering if you are maybe increasing it more rounds than is called for. Let me know and I'll see if I can help you. It's a very cute hat.

I kept going when it stopped increasing for about 4 or 5 rows before I would tear it apart. Now last nite I started over and did double crochet instead of HDC and it came out great. I don't know what I did, but everytime I start a hat the same thing happens unless it's one like Chelle's granny cap.

:oops

What am I doin wrong!?

Thanks for trying. I don't understand it. I made the same hat twice, not doing anything different except changing yarn and one came out fine and the other got scrapped a half dozen times. One of the great mysteries of the universe:wink

when I first started making hats, the mistake I made was to stitch into the joining chain of the round, which adds a stitch every time! Some people suggest putting a pin in your first stitch, which is a great idea, however, I started putting a pin in my LAST stitch as well. That way, I'd start a new round, put a pin in the first stitch, finish the round and when I got to the pin from the last round, I knew it would be the last stitch and I could see the joining chain and not stitch into it! Does that make sense? It really works and before you know it, you'll not need the pins, you'll recognize a joining stitch or the stitch used for row height and not use it for your last stitch! Dar
