Unfortunately, most licensing fees are just so high that nobody could ever hope to sell enough patterns to make back the cost of the licensing fees, let alone the costs of developing and producing the patterns.

 

Some people still still unlicensed patterns, though. :( So just the fact that a pattern is being sold on the internet somewhere doesn't mean it's actually licensed. You have to look for a statement of "officially licensed" or "used with permission" or something to indicate that another party's intellectual property is being respected and used with permission.
