The Basketweave Stitch makes a good men's scarf, and this stitch is found in most stitch libraries, (including the Harmony Guide Book 6 on page 38.) It does require a knowledge of front post and back post double crochet, and there are various pictures on the web showing completed scarves, including this site.

The above link is not working. Here is a beautiful scarf posted here on Crochetville by Leaette done in the Basketweave pattern.

Here is an actual scarf pattern from Coats and Clark:

Chain the full length that you want the scarf to be. SC in each chain to end. Turn...do NOT chain 1. Working in back loops only, sc into each stitch to end. Turn...do NOT chain 1.....repeat; repeat; repeat. It looks ridge-y, like a waffle potato chip. Should only take 1 skein. Fringe or not, up to you. Really makes a nice looking masculine scarf.
