Wool yarn. Help!

srmc

Question

Leave it to me to procrastinate. I had it all figured out that I would finish my mother's present (only 3 rows and a flower) and then felt the darn thing and be all done. Well I have run into a problem.

The pattern calls for one 50-gram ball of 100% wool yarn. The only wool yarn in the entire store was from Patons. It is kind of a chunky weight. Since the rest of the bag is done in a chunky weight, I thought it would be no problem. I bought one 100-gram ball. This should have been plenty to finish my project. The pattern calls for me to use 2 strands. No problem right? Well no problem until I realize that I am running out of yarn. Now I am wondering if there are different types of wool yarn and maybe I should have been using only one strand instead of two. I am also wondering if the yarn company did not give me all my wool. So at this point I am at a stand still and do not know what to do. I can see the need for using 2 strands as I am crocheting the handles but if I use 2 strands I will need to see if I can find another ball of this yarn (I will not tell you how long it took me to find this one).

So to get to my question. Are there different weights of wool yarn? Is that a dumb question? This is my first time to ever use wool yarn and I have no clue. Please help.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I did undo the rows I had completed and started over with just the one strand. I think it will be okay and it is going very quickly.

Amber - The main part of the bag is made with one yarn (multi-colored) and now I am just working on the handle. So taking that part out and starting over is not a big hassle. I only have to complete 4 rows and I only have 1 1/2 left to go!

mmouseplus.gifYes, wool yarn comes in many different weights, just as acrylic yarn or cotton yarn does. And to add to the confusion, there isn't any standards, so ww yarn from one company may not be the same size as from another.

It's always a good idea to buy one extra skein JIC. :D Or be prepared to use something in your statsh in another color for accents.

It is good to know about the wool. Thank you.

I usually buy an extra skein but since I was buying double the amount (100grams instead of 50 grams) I thought I was safe. I really think that the patter was written for a thinner wool for the handle even though it does not state that. The rest of the pattern says to use the chunky weight.

The bag looks great and now I am off to felt it. Thanks again everyone.
