Any knitters online to help me out with this stitch?

I'm making this dishcloth, and while my dishcloth is coming out neat-looking, it's not looking quite like the STAR pattern.

When making the star, how exactly does one "wrap the yarn around the needle"?

I'll try to describe what I am doing:

Insert needle R to L (I'm r handed) purlwise through 3 sts, purl

Keep 3 loops on L needle, new loop on R needle.

Bring R needle around free yarn to create loop on R needle that goes over the back of the needle around to the front.

Insert needle R to L again purlwise through same 3 sts, purl

I think my error is in how I'm wrapping the yarn around the needle, but I don't know.

Could one of you experienced knitters guide me?

BTW, I knit "Continental" style.

K - I think you need to wrap your yarn around the opposite way front to back instead of back to front... if I'm understanding your description correctly.

I'll go take some pics.

Here's what I got Krystal

After a few rows

Purl stitch to demonstrate the way to wrap the yarn.

Purl 3 together.

Wrap yarn around right needle the same way you would if you were purling.

After 2nd purl 3tog. You can see the middle stitch on the right needle is the yarn over.

And keep in mind that the front side is the knit side. I sometimes forget that when doing tricky purl stuff and just knit on the other side.

Hope this helped!
