Crochet and Airplanes

buggaboosmommy

Question

Since my family and I will be flying from Germany to California soon, and it's been over a year since we last made any flights to the United States, I was wondering if anyone was aware of the regulations on crochet hooks/yarn cutters/etc on airlines?

From Germany to Altanta, we will be flying a military chartered aircraft..so I know it's okay on that flight. But from Altanta to San Fran. we will be flying commerical. The last time we flew I was not allowed to bring my hooks onboard.

Anyone flown lately?

I can't vouch for internatioal flights, but a few people i know on us flight wern't checked for hooks, you might pick up a plastic hook just in case and use it during the flight?? :ideanot

We do plan to call the airlines...but here is the problem. We will get on the plane on 1 Feb, our household goods will be packed in about two weeks and we will be living out of suitcases probably until April. So, I just wanted to get some opinions from others that had flown recently. Being military, and of course "hurry up and wait" is their motto, we don't have our actual tickets and probably won't for another 3 weeks.

So..that's why I asked! :) I know from Germany to Altanta I can take them, it's a military chartered airline and they will allow it. Just wasn't sure from Altanta to California. Thanks.

I just tried to post you something about crochet hooks and airlines, but it got lost.

Anywho, as long as your hooks are non-metal, there should be no problem. Last Monday, I flew from Frankfurt, Germany to the US with no problems. Yarn cutters can be disguised as necklace pendants, but that's as good as I know. Even flying domestically, I've been able to take my wooden and plastic hooks with me.

People have had lots of different experiences, it really all depends on how diligent the screener is. Personally, I don't see how a crochet hook is any more dangerous than a ball point pen, but logic doesn't always play into it

Here's a list from the official TSA website

It does say knitting needles & crochet hooks *are* allowed.

Also scissors with blunt tips are allowed, pointed scissors are not allowed. Of course it also says that the TSA agent has authority to allow/not allow something and arguing with them doesn't work

To lower your chances of a problem, bring wood or plastic crochet hooks if you have them. Small nail clippers work well for cutting yarn and are also allowed. The yarn itself is no problem and there is no problem putting hooks/scissors in your checked bags.

What I would suggest is for your in flight project, don't put more in your carry on than you actually need. That way if the screeners won't allow something, you don't lose more than a hook or two rather than all your equipment. Also, I have heard (not done myself though) that you can bring a padded envelope and if they won't allow something, you can mail it.

Have a great trip!

I flew in October in the states and took along plastic hooks and used a dental floss container to cut my yarn. I wasn't stopped at all.

On the way back, I clipped nail clippers to my key chain just to see if I could get through security....no problem. Nail clippers are so much easier to use than a dental floss cutter.

I'm flying this week to Texas to see my son graduate from air force basic training! I plan to take some crochet along and I bought plastic hooks to be on the safe side and have an emply dental tape case to use as a cutter...I also bought plastic darning needles for weaving in the ends and they fit nicely in the dental tape case!! We fly a couple of times a year from Atlanta to London and I've hesitated about even trying to take a crochet hook with me.. and I loathe the plastic ones though have never used the wooden ones. I'll have to keep that in mind next time and then be sure to ask before I get there. It sure would make that 9 hour flight alot shorter !! :)h

I love the idea of clipping the nail clippers to the keychain! Not surprised it works though ;) :bad
