I'm new to crochet and wondered what is spinning?

I've not heard of using vegetable fibers .... could you give some more info?

Flax is the same plant from which linen and rayon are made. Flax fibers which are hand spun can make the thinnest linen thread, and be woven into ultra-fine linen fabric.

 

It's fascinating. There might be a spinning guild near you. It's amazing to watch how it's done. Most guilds are very open to visitors.

 

There also might be a history center which has hand spinners, both spindle and wheel spinners, who are there on certain days to show what hand spinning is.

 

Cotton spinning is fascinating, too. You can actually spin cotton fibers right off the boll.

Very cool. I did a little searching and found that there is a weaver's guild nearby. They're sponsoring a little sale/expo in a few weeks. I think we'll have to check that out.
