i've been working on this bag for a few days, leaning towards making it for a few weeks of lugging groceries and laundry stuff around. i think it would be good for both of those, also books or your latest crochet wip. i decided to post the pattern here since i'm too lazy to go log into my blog right now.

it's very simple mesh, reminds me in small ways of the other two i have designed. except i used 2 strands of yarn held together throughout the whole pattern, and i used an aluminum US size I hook. one yarn is kinda cottony and the other is neon green WW that i think is Simply Soft. it's certainly soft. and light.

anyways here's the pattern

 

(oh yeah i approximate that i used about 8 to 10 ounces of yarn)

 

BOTTOM OF BAG:

chain 19

 

working in Rows

1) dc in 6th ch from hook

(ch1, sk 1 st, dc in next) across to last st.

dc in last st.

 

2) ch4, dc in next ch1 space;

(ch1, dc in next ch1 space) across to last st.

dc in last st.

 

3-16) repeat Row 2.

do not fasten off.

 

BODY OF BAG:

 

working in Rounds

1) ch1, turn

2sc in same st as ch1

sc evenly around the whole rectaungular piece, putting 3 sc's in each of the next 3 corners.

Make an sc in same st as beginning ch1.

Join with sl st to top of first sc

Be sure that you have 104 sc's around. This will help with handle placement later on.

 

2) ch4, do not turn.

(sk 1 sc, dc in next, ch1) around.

Join with sl st to 3rd chain of beginning ch4.

 

3) sl st into first ch1 space

ch4, do not turn.

(sk 1 dc, dc in next ch1 space, ch1) around.

Join with sl st to 3rd chain of beginning ch4.

 

4-20) Repeat Round 3.

 

21) ch1, do not turn.

sc in same space as beginning ch1,

sc in each st around.

Join with sl st to top of first sc.

DO NOT FASTEN OFF

 

HANDLES- First Handle:

 

1) sl st into next sc

ch4, turn.

(sk 1 sc, dc in next, ch1) 3 times

sk 1 sc, dc in next. (you will have 5 bars and 4 spaces)

 

2) ch3, turn

(dc in next ch1 space, ch1) 3 times

dc in last ch1 space and in 3rd ch of ch4 from previous Row

 

3) ch4, turn

dc in next ch1 space

(ch1, dc in next ch1 space) across. (5 bars, 4 spaces)

 

4-22) repeat Rows 2 and 3 alternatively.

At end of Row 22, fasten off yarn, leaving a long enough tail to sew.

 

Count 25 stitches to the left (from the base of attached part of handle)

Sew other end of handle to the 26th through 34th stitches using whip stitch.

 

2ND HANDLE:

 

Count to the left of the side of the handle you just sewed.

Count 9 stitches to the left.

Join yarn (2 strands together) with sl st to 10th stitch from left.

Repeat as for First Handle.

 

You should have 25 sts "under the bridge" of each handle, and 9 stitches separating the two handles on either side.

Make a chain cord if desired, to thread through the top Round of Mesh for a drawstring closure.

Thanks for the pattern. The bag looks sturdy, but pretty, I especially like your choice of colours. I can always use another shopping bag, will have to add it to my list of projects.
