Thoughts on structuring an adult ed course

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am about to start working at an adult Day/Evening College teaching Intro to Computers for both regular folks and Seniors. I mentioned my interest in doing a crochet class and the director said that she wouldn't have time to fit it into the brochure, but if I wanted to work up a blurb and time structure she'd put it on the website to gauge interest...

My first question regards timing and structure... the options are:

2 hours per week for up to 8 weeks in the daytime

2 hours per week for up to 8 weeks in the evening (Mon-Fri)

4 or 8 hours workshop style on a Saturday or consecutive Saturdays

Which do you think would be best for an intro to crocheting course?

A lot depends on what audience you are hoping to reach. People with jobs could only come at night during the week. Retired age would probably prefer daytime. Saturday classes for adults are usually hard to fill, and four hours is too long.

Two hour classes work well, and the eight week format should let you cover all the basics and a bit beyond, and get them launched on a real first project.

Thanks,

I was thinking the 2 hr evening option was probably the best... My instinct was that the 4 to 8 hr workshop style would not be suited, especially for introductory level courses...

Two hours in the evening for six weeks

Two hours on Saturdays every other week, with a total of six classes.

Just what might appeal to me.

I agree that over two hours might be too much for introductory classes.
