i did the same thing for my DD to match the top that i made her but i think i ss to the band then chained some more then went back down the chain doing sc then sc at the ss at the band then sc to the end and weaved in ends - i did like eight of these so it went all around the pony. i just love these - will have to try the 3 stitches per chain idea though - and maybe only do one curly each instead of the 2 'v' type that i did
