Have you looked at Jenny Dowde's books? She has some exercises to get you started.

 

If you are mainly doing it for the experience, does it really matter what the result looks like? Just think of it as an experiment, rip it out, and reuse the yarn for another experiment!

I was always one of those "by the book" kind of people until I discovered free-form crochet. Think of it as I did as a "quit being so rigid" kind of therapy. It goes well with an afghan and a cup of tea.
