Terminology Confusion

In many of the older patterns for threadwork the directions call for something like "Article 40" or "Article 30", especially on those from the American Thread Company. What exactly is this? I think it must refer to thread size but frankly am not sure.

It was one of their product codes. Doesn't help us much now. The best way to figure out what size thread they truly wanted is to look at the hook size. You can normally tell what size thread by that.

Ah. That was one of my other guesses. Too bad it's not so simple as a thread size. Thank you, Kathy.
