That's the pattern I'm trying to do. I'm on row 5 of the 5-8 step.

 

Here's my question: I did 15 HDC in row 4....how can I do a HDC in the SC if I didn't do any SC? Also...why 12 when I did 15 the row before...how would I choose which 12 to stitch into?

Looking at the pattern it looks like typos to me. You will be doing hdc's in the previous rows hdc's (not sc's) for row 2 on up. Also, for rows 5-8 you will have 15 hdc's, not 12 - so when you do the decrease over the first 2 hdc's and last 2 hdc's on row 9, you will end up with 13 hdc's.
