Prayer Shawl for a Man

Bearsgrammy

Question

Hi Everyone: I recently read an article about crocheting prayer shawls for men. I know a "shawl" of this type would have to be pretty unfeminine, and all the shawl patterns I have seen are for women. Our Pastor was just diagnosed with Chrohn's Disease. He is still a fairly young man at 47 years of age. Does anyone know of any patterns (preferably printable) that I could use to make him a prayer shawl. It seems sort of dumb in one way, but very meaningful in another. He is going to Afica soon on a two month sabbatical mission trip, and I though, if nothing else, it could be used down there. Any help with this request, or any ideas would be very much appreciated, as he is "the real thing"---he lives what he believes and has been there for all of us at Christ Church. Thanks, even if it is not possible to dig up a pattern. :manyheart

What if you just made a rectangle out of any stitch you like. Or maybe a ripple or out of granny squares. When I try and picture a male shawl that is what I saw. Kind of like little smaller than a lapghan he can put over his shoulders. Good Luck! :manyheart

How about like what Jewish men wear....it would be easy to design, just a rectangle for the front and back....sew on one end, leaving a space for the head....sort of a prayer poncho..:yes....think they have some sort of tassling...suppose to be four I think.....find the scriptures that give the describtion..and go from there...:hook

I have made lapghans for men using any afghan pattern that I liked. Used RH speckled yarn, and even used a baby afghan pattern with blue, green, and tan. You can try this Jacob's Ladder afghan pattern - just don't make it so wide - so it will fit nicely across the lap with some extra on each side.

My pattern copied and pasted fine. But when I previewed it, it had become a jumbled mess.

So I added a / at the beggining of every row of type. There are only two rows here.

I wish I could post a picture. It looks very much like the Harry Potter scarfs, that is what my Grandchildren thought I was making when they first saw me crocheting one. I have made quite a few of these for men and are well received when called a Shoulder Blanket.

/ 3 x 3 THE PRAYER SHAWL (Shoulder Blanket)

/ Approx 20 x 70 ins

/ U.S. K-hook

/ Ch 70. maybe a few extra you can remove.

/ Chain loosely or use an L-hook for the chain.

/ 1st row:

/ 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as 2 dc).

/ 1 dc in next ch. ((3 total dc))

/ (Ch 1. Miss next ch. 1 dc in next ch)

Just learned today that Pastor is not doing well at all, Africa trip may not be a possiblity for him. I really value your interest in my post and also, any prayers for John Collins. Love you people!
