Buying Yarn On-Line

Where do you buy your yarn on line? Who do you recommend?

 

I'm kind of bummed. I went tonight to get some yarn at Hobby Lobby or at Joann's and they have really shrunk their yarn section. I want to make the little short sleeved sweater jacket in the latest Hooked on Crochet and it calls for sport weight yarn. HL had almost nothing and Joann's sport weight was all baby colors. I didn't want to look like I was wearing a baby afghan! LOL

 

Has anyone made this sweater that is in the HOOKED ON CROCHET this month?

I just placed an order with Smiley's Yarns. You have to have a $40 minimum order, and shipping is $12.95, but you can order a lot of yarn for $40, NICE yarn. I have to have several projects in mind before I let myself spend that much, I don't order it just to have it in stash.

This is the second order I've made with them.

I go to Joann's but only like to order when there is free shipping or a nice sale. I also go to craftsetc.com as their RR is cheaper than Joann's

I usually order my yarn online from Herrschners. I wait until they have free shipping, keeping a list of what I need until the free shipping comes around.

 

I have bought some items from knittingwarehouse.com -- good prices and reasonable shipping charges. Much more reasonable than most.

I've only ever ordered from KnitPicks and was really satisfied. Order enough and you get free shipping as well!

another question. My pattern calls for 1.75 oz skeins/200 yards.

 

On one of the websites it says they carry 1.75 oz skeins, BUT they are 145 yards. How is that? Does that mean I need to buy more skeins than what my pattern really asks for??

You have to make sure that the gauge is nearly the same, then go by yardage/meters to make sure you will have enough.

...just to add...it does seem hard to find a selection of sport weight in stores; online is your best bet for that...
