Question

.. I found the awesomest old old even older than my granny almost pattern book this morning at a yard sale!! :clap The original price is a big fat 10¢ right on the cover!! :lol but its a big book!! Its Clarks *J&P Coats "New Book of Pot Holders Dishcloths & Hot Platter Mats" Its so kewl!!! :yay Oh & get this, the lady GAVE it to me!! :c9 She was so sweet & so nice!! She didnt have ANY other crochet stuff or yarn or anything, but she did have some embroidery hoops, that were real wood & kinda kewl, so I bought like 6 of those, for a quarter...lol 25¢ for ALL of 'em!!

Anyway... in this pattern book, ALL of the patterns call for J&P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Bedspread Cotton, J&P Coats O.N.T. Pearl cotton, Clarks three cord mercerized crochet. :think Is that stuff thread or yarn? or like cotton, sugar & cream, lilys, etc? I know what kro sheen is or at least I think I do. :U

Can someone help me figure this out please? :hook

It's all thread. I'm pretty sure all size 10 or 20. But definately thread. Hope this helps some. You can go to http://www.coatsandclark.com/find_a_product/knitting_crochet/knitting_crochet.htm and get a better idea of what you have.

I am as old as dirt so can help with your question.

Mercerised means it has a glossy sheen on it. The sizes of thread go, the bigger the number the smaller the thread so number 10 cotton is reasonably thick but not as thick as yarn.

Coates is a well known brand of crochet threads and were usually pure cotton. The things I own, crocheted in about a 40 cotton, from when I was young, are still going strong. It will virtually last forever so was well worth the effort put in by the person who made it.

I bought some old doilies at the local Op Shop the other day and one looks like it is made of sewing thread it is so fine and beautiful. I paid 50cents NZ, in fact I bought about 8 doilies for about $3.00 NZ. My sister collects old fabrics of all sorts so she will get them as part of her Birthday gift this month.

You will need to find some old crochet hooks too and get yourself some cotton and get going on your patterns.

You could use yarn and the appropriate sized hook (for the yarn) and make an afghan using the pattern for a small doily. It will come out much bigger of course but would look great.

Have fun.
