Tassel help

deneen

Question

I finished a shawl and I want to put a tassel on each point in the front. How big should they be? Is there an easy way to create them? How would I attach it to the point?

Yes, I know, easy questions for some of you pros out there, but I need help!:think

I have a tassel maker, but I don't bother with it unless I'm going to be making a huge number of tassels. For the last scarf I made I decided how long I wanted the tassels to be, doubled that, and added a little extra for the knot. Then I just cut the pieces to that length.

I gather the cut pieces together, fold them in the middle and use a crochet hook to pull the loop through the crochet. Hold the loop (the folded part) open and slip the tassels ends through it and pull it up snug. That's the basic lark's head knot that's used in macrame. Once it's snugged up, tie an overhand knot as close as possible, to finish it off. You can experiment with the length and see what you like best.

I finished my first tassel this morning for a thread bookmark I've been working on. I found a site that had nice directions for tassel making!

Here it is: http://www.ehow.com/how_5885_make-tassel.html

I am never one to follow directions exactly (something to do with right brain vs left brain I think! :lol), so I just did the same basic idea...cut a square of cardboard, wound around it until I felt I had enough and then followed the directions for the top part!

Hope that this might help!

Cheers!

Great directions, Kimberly. That's how I make tassels. Using a piece of cardboard cut to the length I want the tassels to be. Then just wrap the yarn/thread around the cardboard until I get the right amount. Don't wrap too tight, tho, or the cardboard may bend. After I secure the tasselsl I trim the ends to make them all exact.
