"Peppermint" coaster

Free pattern of the day from Annie's....I had a bit of trouble with this, as simple as it is! :think But Amy helped....so without further ado, and please forgive the loose ends.

The pattern said to use a G hook, I ended up with a J! The first one I made was just shy of 4.5" across, and I thought it looked a little "skimpy". What do you think?

I didn't really like how it looked, that you could basically see through it.

So I switched to two strands of yarn. Still, it wasn't quite right, so I eliminated the ch 4 and went with ch 3 on the final white round. It turned out a little bigger, and to me it seems more suited to having a coffee mug sit on it.

What do you think? Which one is better? I was thinking of making a set of four, and giving them to DD's piano teacher along with a nice coffee mug and maybe some gourmet coffee....would that be a good gift? :gift [The piano keys scarf I was going to make was even more frustrating than these silly things!]

I got that pattern this morning, too. I love it! I think the two strands is better, too. I'll have to try that when I make some. (Going to the store right now to get more red yarn.) I also think it will make a great gift, I was thinking of doing the same myself, for anyone in general... :)

OK, my final decision was to use two strands of yarn throughout, and an I hook. I feel like these things are all over the place now! I have four; the original one, the J hook/two strand one, and two of the I hook/two strand ones....more to come, too! My DH suggested I make even MORE for other people.....easy for him to say! :lol
